If you have visited our office recently, you may have noticed a new piece of equipment, or heard us mention StemWave. It is one of the most exciting tools we have added to the practice, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. The word "shockwave" makes some people picture something intense or uncomfortable. The reality is much gentler, so let us walk through what it actually is, what a session feels like, and who it tends to help.
What StemWave actually does
StemWave is a form of acoustic wave therapy. The device delivers focused sound waves through the skin into an injured or painful area. Those waves do not cut, burn, or numb anything. Instead, they create a tiny, controlled stress signal in the tissue, and your body responds to that signal the way it responds to any call for repair: by increasing local blood flow and recruiting its own healing resources to the area.
In other words, StemWave does not do the healing itself. It reminds your body where healing is needed and encourages the processes that may have stalled. That is why it pairs so naturally with chiropractic care. Adjustments address how your joints move and how your body carries load, while StemWave supports the soft tissue that has been irritated or slow to recover.
What a session feels like
A typical StemWave session in our Tinley Park office takes about five to ten minutes. You will be seated or lying down, we apply a gel to the skin, and the handpiece is moved slowly over the treatment area while it pulses. Most patients describe the sensation as a firm, rhythmic tapping. When we pass over an irritated spot, you will usually feel it more distinctly, and that feedback is actually useful: it helps us map exactly where your tissue is most reactive.
There are no needles, no medication, and no downtime. You can drive yourself home, return to work, and go about your day as usual. Some people feel mild soreness afterward, similar to the feeling after a good workout, and it typically settles quickly.
The kinds of problems it is used for
We most often reach for StemWave when pain involves soft tissue: muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the tissue around joints. Common examples include:
- Chronic back or neck pain that has plateaued with other care
- Shoulder pain and rotator cuff irritation
- Tennis elbow and golfer's elbow
- Plantar fasciitis and stubborn heel pain
- Knee and hip pain related to overuse

Who should consider it, and who should not
StemWave is drug-free and non-invasive, which makes it an appealing option for people who want to avoid injections or additional medication, and for those who have been told their only remaining options are more aggressive ones. That said, it is not right for everyone or every condition. Certain situations, such as pregnancy or active infection in the treatment area, call for different approaches. That is exactly why we evaluate first and recommend second.
The honest bottom line
No therapy fixes everything, and anyone who promises that should earn your skepticism. What we can say honestly is this: many of our patients with chronic, nagging soft-tissue pain have been genuinely surprised by how much relief they found once StemWave was added to their care plan.
